A 19th-century midlands lace bobbin hand-turned from bone inscribed with the romantic message ‘LOVE DONT BE CRUEL’. There is red and black dotted decoration between the lines of text, and red coloured rilling at the top and bottom of the shaft.
The head and tail are complete with no chips or defects, and the overall condition is commensurate with its age. It has an antique spangle. We do not add or change spangles on antique bobbins, and so this is the spangle the bobbin had when it came to us.
The bobbin measures 101mm long (excluding spangle) and c.6mm in diameter (widest section).
