A 19th-century midlands lace bobbin hand-turned from bone with a romantic spiral inscription ‘I LOVE MY LOVE BECAUSE I NO MY LOVE LOVES ME’. Spelling mistakes are common on inscribed antique bobbins because the turners were probably illiterate.
The head and tail are complete with no chips or defects, and the overall condition is commensurate with its age. It has a replacement spangle. We do not add or change spangles on antique bobbins, and so this is the spangle the bobbin had when it came to us.
This bobbin was made by Jesse Compton. It was identified using the guide in the book 'Success to the Lace Pillow' by Christine and David Springett.
The bobbin measures 104.5mm long (excluding spangle) and c.6mm in diameter (widest section).
